Life After Racing Stands Out at the Pacific Classic

The biggest race of the summer at Del Mar is coming up on Saturday, August 30, with the $1 million Pacific Classic, and Del Mar will go all out to promote Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance to what should be a large audience, both on-track and via various simulcast outlets, most notably FanDuel TV.

“As our biggest race day of the year, the Pacific Classic is the perfect opportunity to spotlight the work of the TAA,” said Josh Rubinstein, the president of the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club. “This year, we’re proud to feature a TAA-presented race and a VIP track experience that was a recent charity auction item. We’ll also have video features, signage, and announcements recognizing TAA and encouraging fans to learn more and get involved.

“It’s all part of our effort to make aftercare a consistent part of the conversation, especially on racing’s biggest days.”

The Pacific Classic is a high-profile day for aftercare at Del Mar, but the message is relayed daily throughout both the summer and fall meetings.

“Each year, we work closely with the TAA team to highlight their mission through content and events that help engage our audience and educate them on the importance of aftercare,” Rubinstein said. “The daily racing program and on-track signage are some of traditional things we’ve done to help with overall awareness of TAA.

“At Del Mar, we believe that supporting Thoroughbred aftercare is a fundamental responsibility of the racing industry. These incredible athletes give so much on the track, and it’s our duty to ensure they have safe, meaningful lives once their racing careers are over.

“The TAA plays a vital role in making that happen.” Rubinstein said. “Their accreditation process, financial support, and national network of facilities provide a consistent, high standard of care. We’re proud to partner with an organization that brings both integrity and compassion to this critical issue.”

“The TAA brings structure, accountability, and transparency to aftercare on a national scale. I’m proud to support that mission because I believe the long-term health of our industry depends on how we care for our horses -- on and off the track.”

Rubinstein is involved on multiple levels. In addition to overseeing Del Mar and its messaging on aftercare, Rubinstein himself is on TAA’s board of directors.

“For me, supporting aftercare is about doing what’s right for the horses — the heart and soul of our sport,” he said. “We celebrate them when they win, and we need to stand by them when their careers are over. Serving on the board of the TAA has given me an even deeper appreciation for the complexity and importance of this work — from funding and accreditation to education and outreach.
